Kerrison School

Today’s post is about retirement and closure, back in 2011 I was in Thorndon, Suffolk to meet woodwork teacher Brian Atkinson who had worked at the Kerrison School for 46 years the reason for his retirement was that the school was being closed by the local authority since it first opened after 150 years.

As soon as I stepped into the workshop, it was like being back at school myself, taking me right back to the day when I use to woodwork at school. It looked and smelt the same, the same wooden benches, bits of wood leant against the back wall, sawdust on the floor and the slight smell of burnt wood from a sanding disc.

For the pictures I did the usual ones of tight portraits of him upright and landscape, but gradually moving outwards to get more of him in the environment. Till I got to the one below, which shows Brian in situ of the workshop and the one which I like the most.

The school was originally set up in 1856 by Sir Edward Kerrison as a Reformatory school as a way for young offenders as an alternative to prison. The school and grounds have now been turned into homes.

Hi just reading the blog as to Kerrison school.
I was at the school 1974…1976.
I was in the painters decorators . A bill cleve was our teacher.
When I was put in the home it was the last stop off for me bassicly a no hopper.
The school turned my life around. At 15 the school sent me to Ipswich civic college. I galned a o level in painting decorating. The first time in the schools history this had happened.

I now run a business for the last 40 years as a decorator . I have called the business after Kerrison school.
Mr. Kerrisons…..Kerrisons decorators.. The name is now a national as well as local well known business.

I am contacting you as to show my gratitude for the school looking after me teaching me my god gifted trade. Even today we are growing all the time. Now reached the 60 mark. My son has now taking full control of the Kerrison business. So the name will live on.

I feel it is now time to tell the story of the the Kerrison school dinisty to keep the name alive .
Without my teacher Mr Gleve the decorating teacher who took me under his wing . I would have probably fall by the way side. When I went to the school I was one of the worst kids out of control. No fault of my own. But the school saved me

    3 Cher’s for Kerrison school..hip hip hurray…hip hip hurray…hip hip Harry.
Prior to this I was sent to borstal . Detention center . Yp. Asset ent center
This Kerrison school saved my life…I have a lovely family. Ups and downs. 2 great kids. 2 grand children . And a great branded business. Mr. Kerrisons.

Maybe this can be turned into a best seller book to keep the school name alive
